How many times have you gone out to a store or restaurant, purchased something and upon receiving it you thought to yourself that’s disappointing?

We all know that fast food companies are among some of the biggest offenders when it comes to perception versus reality. But I’m pretty sure everyone has had this experience with packaged products as well.

As funny as some of the images might be to look at, companies that partake in this sort of marketing are putting themselves in a very dangerous position. According to a study conducted by CONE communications in 2015, almost 9 out of 10 Americans will seriously consider not buying a product if they feel they are being deceived.

What can be done to avoid this issue especially for companies who aren’t actually trying to be deceptive with their descriptions? 

Well, transparent packaging and packaging windows could be an answer. Cleverly placed windows or transparent packaging allow the consumer to see what they are actually purchasing and helps to build a higher level of trust between customers and brands.

It makes sense when just thinking about it, but where’s the science? There’s the science. An eye tracking study conducted at Clemson University found that transparency and increased visibility in packaging led to a 678 percent increase in ability to capture consumers attention on the shelf. Furthermore, some additional analysis shows that this increased visibility can increase sales by over 200%. The science matches logic here and it’s clear that when consumers can actually see the product are more likely to be drawn to it.
