We’re out of cereal again. I feel like we just bought some. I don’t want to buy another box and I just wish there was some way some or some system that would allow for me to just refill my box. Single use packaging is kind of waste.

Wouldn’t it be nice if refilling any empty box can or bottle in your house were as easy as pouring fresh water into your previously used water bottles?

Well, maybe it can be. Nestle makers of stuff recently started testing refill stations in a few stores in Switzerland. How does it work? Shoppers use large dispensers to pour Purina pet food products or nest cafe coffee products into reusable smart cups. You don’t even have to pull a lever. The cup contains technology that communicates with a sensor under the dispenser. Once the cup has been recognized, an automatically measured amount of the product is dispensed into the container.

“These particular dispensers are novel because they incorporate smart technology and closed canisters, which allows us to ensure product safety, hygiene, and also guarantees the freshness and full traceability of our products,” says R&D packaging lead at Nestle. While convenience is certainly a factor, decreasing the amount of single-use packaging in the world seems to be the main targets. The innovation comes in collaboration with the startup called MIWA, which is short for minimum waste. The desire to start cutting back on single-use packaging has been a growing trend for the past few years. Loop, another startup that provides food delivery services using exclusively reusable packaging. Nestle is hoping that this innovation will not only help to cut back on the amount of single-use packaging in the world but also will give consumers a sense of convenience and reassurance that their products are as fresh as possible.

What are your thoughts on this? Should more companies try to implement a refill option for their products? Products like cereal immediately come to mind for me since these nestle dispensers remind me of the cereal fountains found at most hotel buffets.
