I hate peanut butter knuckles. What are peanut butter knuckles? It’s when you get to the last of the peanut butter in the bottom of jar and then you’ve got to reach down in thereand you get peanut butter all over your knuckles.

Do you remember how difficult life was before the squeeze bottle?

Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise and the endless struggle between scraping out the bottom of the bottle with a knife.

Why is it everything in a squeeze bottle, for example, like peanut butter? No. These two packaging designs were born out of a need for a more ergonomic peanut butter container.

Ergonomic Packaging

Ergonomic packaging is an applied science concerned with designing and arranging things people use so that the people and things interact most efficiently and safely. Basically, it means making a product that is easier to use. “no more peanut butter knuckles when you’re trying to get the last ounce of goodness from the bottom of the peanut butter jar. No knife. No spoon. No problem!” Says Rebecca Scheidler, vice president of marketing for jiff. With Skippy squeeze and Skippy added protein, we’re providing consumers a cleaner and easier way to spread the Skippy peanut butter and peanut butter spreads they love.” Says Jennesa Kinscher, Skippy brand manager.

It’s really interesting how brands are able to identify these unarticulated consumer needs. I’ve been getting peanut butter on my knuckles on the edge of the container for years, but I’ve never even considered that something can be done to improve my experiences. The key here is to note the importance of ergonomics in packaging design. Wow much better have economic designs of the past improved the consumer experience? What can you do to your own package to make it more ergonomic? It’s a good question to keep in mind the next time you enter the design process.
