In some very interesting recent news, Diageo, makers of Johnnie Walker whiskey have announced plans to release a paper-based bottle in 2021. That’s right. A Spirits bottle made out of paper. Someone would say that other companies have made paper-based bottles before too. That’s true, but this is the world’s first 100% plastic free paper-based bottles.

To create these bottles, pulp molds will be pressed and then cured in microwave ovens.

The inside of the bottles will then be sprayed with a coating that is designed not to interact with the alcohol. Think about it that paper bottles are sure to be a lot lighter than glass bottles saving a lot of money on shipping right there. “We’re proud to have created this world first we are constantly striving to push the boundaries within sustainable packaging and this bottle has the potential to be truly groundbreaking,” says Diageo sustainability officer Ewan Andrew.

An innovation like this is a huge step forward for sustainability and it might be the inspiration for a lot of other great ideas in the future. What this news really got me thinking about was finding solutions to problems that we didn’t previously think possible. Think about smart packaging or even as far back as frozen packaging, innovation is born from looking at scenarios that can’t be solved and solving them.

What’s your take on this new packaging solution? Is it the plastic substitute so many people have been looking for? It’s definitely too early to tell but hopefully we’ll continue to see further improvements like this in the future.
